Why I developed The ShadyRider?
The ShadyRider Company Inc. was founded in Canada by a fair skinned blondie who knows well enough what sunburn feels like!
I have a clear mission: to provide riders with a health minded bike helmet brim to block the sun from burning necks and faces. I wanted a safer sun protection that doesn’t compromise visibility or style.
Once I began our three focuses became clear under one goal, RIDER SAFETY.
SUNBURN
Cyclist-Specific Rates: Studies of cycling athletes show that between 17% and 45.6% report at least one sunburn annually.
In a focused study of app-using cyclists (e.g., Strava users), 61% of their total annual sunburns were directly attributed to time spent on the bike.
- General Population Comparison: Roughly 33% of all Canadian adults and over one-third of US adults report a sunburn each year. Cyclists often exceed these averages due to “unintentional tanning” during long rides.
Our Patented Snap In Snap Out brim technology improves visibility and rider awareness while giving the option to change lens tints or install a full Sun Black-Out lens.
TRAFFIC INJURIES
50,000 cyclists are injured every year. Stats indicateCrash types often linked to drivers failing to detect cyclists (e.g., failure to yield, looked-but-failed-to-see at intersections or when turning) make up a substantial portion—estimates from various studies suggest 20–50%+ of motorist-at-fault crashes involve detection/perception errors.
If visibility/detection issues factor into roughly 30–50% of motor vehicle-cyclist injury crashes (a conservative range from crash typology studies), that could mean 15,000–25,000+ injuries per year in the U.S. alone where “not being seen” plays a role.
NIGHT INJURIES
Furthermore, Nighttime/low-light crashes often involve “not being seen” factors and are linked to more severe outcomes. In fact, 51% of all cycling injuries occur at dusk, night or dawn hours with 6:00-9:00pm being labelled -THE DANGER ZONE.
Nighttime/low-light conditions (where “not being seen” is common) account for ~50% or more of fatalities in some analyses, and a significant share of injuries.
